Where is Mabul?"Mabul is an island off the south-eastern coast of Sabah in Malaysia. It first became popular due to its proximity to Sipadan island.
Few years back, it has gained its recognition as one of the best "muck diving" sites in the world. Mabul island is a small oval shaped island surrounded by sandy beaches and perched on the northwest corner of a larger 2 square kilometre reef.
It is more correctly recognised now that the reason for the quality of the MUCK Diving is simply a result of overfishing uses of cyanide and dynamite by the local people of this area."
How to Get There? From Kota Kinabalu, take a 55-minute flight to Tawau and enjoy an hour’s drive to Semporna. From here, Mabul is another 45 minutes by speedboat. Be sure to pre-arrange transportation with your respective resort/dive operator.
On Diving.Three combination boat dives a day, unlimited jetty diving on Mabul Island. Water temperatures range from 26°C-31°C. Thermoclines exist, especially on Sipadan, and divers should be prepared with a range of protection. As a minimum, pack a woolly-lined lycra suit and possibly a 3mm one-piece neoprene suit.
Visibility averages 15 to 30+ metres around Sipadan and is extremely variable; without warning it can drop to three to six metres. Around Mabul it sometimes no more than 6-7 metres, especially if someone has kicked up the silt.
Safety. Most of you know about the Abu Sayyaf kidnappings that happened in Sipadan. After that incident, the place is crawling with guards guarding the island with M16s. So far tourists have no complaints and the island's are safe.
